About
About Lot & Gavel
We’re a small team of buyers, authenticators and engineers in New York, building a better way to buy and sell pre-owned luxury in the US. We open in March 2027.

A piece’s history shouldn’t vanish at resale
Buying pre-owned luxury online usually means trusting a few photographs and a stranger’s description. Authentication, when it happens at all, often happens after you’ve paid. And every time a piece changes hands, whatever was known about it (where it came from, what has been repaired, who owned it) tends to disappear.
Lot & Gavel works the other way round. We inspect every item before it’s listed, grade its condition plainly, and keep a written record of what we know about it. That record ships with the piece and stays on file with us, so the next buyer starts with everything you knew.
The name comes from the auction room. The lot is the piece itself, and the gavel marks the moment it passes to its next owner. Every lot we sell also carries a ledger entry, the record that goes with it.
How we work
What we hold ourselves to
Four rules that shape every decision in the studio, from which pieces we buy to how we describe them.
If in doubt, we don’t list it
A piece that two specialists can’t agree on doesn’t go on sale, however good the margin.
Grades you can take at face value
We grade conservatively and photograph every flaw. If a piece arrives looking better than its listing, that’s the right way round.
One standard for every seller
Pieces found by our own buyers go through exactly the same checks as pieces from independent sellers. Nobody gets waved through.
The record belongs to the piece
We keep ledger entries after a sale, so a piece’s history doesn’t end when it leaves us.
